Your Site-Work Questions, Answered

The questions CT property owners bring to us most about site work, grading, drainage, and septic systems — answered plainly by the people who do the work.

Are you licensed and insured?
Yes, on both counts. Roberts Construction carries Connecticut License #123456 along with general liability and workers' compensation coverage on every project we take on. Just ask and we'll send over a current certificate of insurance before any equipment rolls onto your property, so you always know who is working your land.
How do I get a free estimate?
Call us at (401) 479-1472 or fill out the contact form, and DJ or Trevor will set up a time to walk the site with you. Once we've looked over the ground, the grade, and how we'll get equipment in, you'll receive a written estimate that breaks the scope out line by line, usually back to you within a day or two.
What areas do you serve in Connecticut?
We're based in Plainfield, which puts Windham County right in our backyard and accounts for most of what we build. Beyond that we work into New London, Tolland, and Hartford counties. If your site sits farther afield in Connecticut, give us a call and we'll give you a straight answer on whether we're the right crew for the job.
Do you offer emergency services?
Yes. A failed drainage line, a septic system that quits, a washout after a heavy storm, none of it waits for business hours, and neither do we. Call (401) 479-1472 whenever trouble hits and we'll get a crew rolling. After-hours emergency work runs at a separate rate, and we'll make that clear the moment you call.
Do you charge extra for travel?
Within our core service area of Windham, New London, and Tolland counties, travel is already built into the price with no extra line item. If your project reaches into Hartford, New Haven, or Fairfield counties, we may add a modest mobilization fee to cover moving equipment that distance. Either way, it's written into your estimate up front, never added on after the fact.
How quickly can you respond to projects?
That depends on how far your site is from Plainfield and what's already booked on our calendar. Projects close to home can often break ground within a few days. Sites farther out typically fall one to two weeks into the schedule. Real emergencies move to the front of the line regardless of location, any hour of the day.
Do you know the permit requirements in my town?
We've filed permits in town halls across Connecticut, and the requirements really do change from one town to the next, some flag any earthwork while others only certain projects. We'll walk you through what your town requires during the estimate and can handle the paperwork ourselves so nothing holds the project up.
Have you worked in my area before?
Odds are good that we have. Twenty-plus years working across eastern Connecticut means we've built in most of these towns and come to know how the ground behaves, what each local office looks for, and how the terrain changes from one field to the next. That experience keeps our estimates grounded and our schedules realistic.
What soil conditions should I expect?
It changes a lot from lot to lot around here, sandy loam in one place, glacial till or solid ledge a mile down the road. Having moved so much of this ground over the years, we can usually anticipate what's sitting under your site and price it in from the start, which keeps surprises mid-project to a minimum.
How are projects priced?
Whenever the work allows it, we give you a fixed price tied to a defined scope instead of running an open meter, so the figure you sign off on is the figure you pay. When there's a real unknown in the mix, such as buried rock, we may price it time and materials, but we set a cap so the total can't spiral on you.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. We take a deposit to lock in your place on the schedule, usually somewhere between a quarter and half of the total depending on the size of the job, with the balance due once the work wraps up. On bigger projects we can arrange payments tied to milestones as the work progresses.
